Our Animals

At Maddy & Sven’s Sanctuary, our animals are more than residents—they’re family.

Each one has their own unique journey. Some came to us from neglect or abandonment, others were rescued from slaughter or unsafe living conditions. Many have known hardship, but here, they discover healing, trust, and the joy of simply being themselves.

Sven

Sven was our very first rescue horse. After years of living out his retirement, he sadly passed away in 2022, due to DSLD. We honored his memory but naming the sanctuary in his name.

Amber

Amber was an owner surrender from the barn we first boarded Sven at prior to moving him to our own property. She came to us with severe heaves, DSLD, chronic laminitis, cushings, and cancer. Despite everything, she was so strong until the end.

Rudy

At over 17hh, Rudy is our largest resident. We saw Rudy at a kill pen with hours until he would load the truck to Canada for slaughter. Once he arrived, he wouldn't anyone touch him but he has since become the sweetest boy. Most of Rudys scars are internal after years of abuse. He has come so far to be a true gentle giant.

Helen

Helen is a sweet standardbred mare who came to the sanctuary in 2022. Helen and Amber met and immediately formed the most special bond we had ever witnessed in animals. We truly believe they had met before in another lifetime. Helen has EPM and is on daily supplements to help keep her healthy.

Mint Paddy

Mint Paddy is a standardbred mare that came to us in severe neglect and abuse. She is completely blind in both eyes and was left for dead by another “sanctuary” that has since faced criminal charges for their actions. Paddy was emaciated, dehydrated, and stressed beyond belief. She has severe arthritis, chronic lymes disease, and an aggressive heart murmur. She is very traumatized from her life of abuse but still trusts us to guide her where she needs to go.

Margot

Margot is our other mother donkey. She is the mom to Agnes and adopted mom to Harry. Margot was at Bowie’s killpen in Texas and during quarantine with her daughter Agnes she mothered an orphan donkey, Harry. Margot is stoic and still is unsure of humans, but she trusts us and is finally safe at home forever.

Agnes

Agnes is our largest standard donkey. She is the daughter of Margot. With her mother, Agnes made it out of the killpen to live our her days together as a family. Agnes is quirky and sweet and will always run up for a treat.

Milla

Milla is one of our 6 donkey residents. She is the mother to Osian and Bodhi. She is a strong and confident girl that is incredibly smart. She was at Bowie’s killpen in Texas, pregnant and with another baby by her side. She was rescued by a previous sanctuary that closed down. We kept their family together to live out their days.

Osian

Osian is the daughter of Milla and sister to Bodhi. She was only a few months old when she was saved from shipping to slaughter. She is the largest personality on the farm and is the one who will always cheer you up. When she is not doing that she is getting into some mischief and of course she gets away with it with that face!

Harry

Harry is our sweet only boy with 5 girl donkeys. He was left at a quarantine facility where the other 5 donkeys had stayed. Margot took him under her wing to keep him safe. He is the most precious little man who loves his girls so much.

Bodhi

Bodhi is the baby of the donkey herd at just 3 years old. She was born on Christmas day. Her mother, Milla, was pregnant with her and shipping to slaughter. She now gets to live out her forever with her sister and mother together at our sanctuary. She is the sweetest, most innocent baby on the farm.

Peanut

Peanut was rescued with her sister Cookie from a farm that raises goats for meat. We negotiated with the farmer to give us these two babies. They were being fed scraps and were incredibly thin and filled with lice and coccidia bacteria. They are inseparable.

Cookie

Cookie came to us with her sister Peanut from a farm that would sell them for meat. She has had many medical issues since arrival, that involved a stay at New Bolton Medical Center in PA. She is on the mend and getting stronger every day.

Yoshi

Yoshi came to us with his brothers from a nearby neglect case. They were being raised as food for an exotic pet but the owner did not spay or neuter the pigs and then got evicted from his home, leaving the pigs at risk of slaughter. We worked hard to help save the other pigs at this property, with all 70+ pigs getting a home.

Fruit Loops

Fruit loops came to the sanctuary with his brothers Yoshi and Uncle Bubbles. Saved from the risk of slaughter, Fruit loops as thrived at the sanctuary. He is the first animal to be out in the morning for breakfast with his oinks and tail wagging. Fruity suffers from dippity pig syndrome which can be painful and there is no cure.

Uncle Bubbles

Uncle Bubbles came to us with his brothers Yoshi and Fruit loops. When we originally agreed to rescue pigs, we said we would take in 2. The owner said I trapped 3 and to pick the 2. We were not about to leave Uncle Bubbles there so we loaded him up to live out his days with his brothers.

Georgia

Georgia was rescued with her sister Ginny from a “free to a good home” Craig’s List ad. They came in as baby piglets and required around the clock care and feedings. They now live out with Peanut and Cookie in our Little Girl’s field.

Ginny

Ginny is the sister to Georgia and was one of the “free to a good home” Craig’s List ad piglets. She and Georgia are inseparable and love to cuddle in their blankets in their house.
